FACT SHEET

PLIGHT OF THE ORANGUTAN
Orangutans are an endangered species, and at the current rate of decline we stand to lose this great ape within our lifetime.

It is estimated that only 20,000 - 30,000 are left in the wild today, and numbers are declining fast. Deforestation is the number one threat with land cleared for permanent agriculture and logging destroying the orangutan’s natural habitat.

Orangutan Appeal UK was set up in 2000. Although we’re registered in the UK – all our donations come back to Sepilok and wherever orangutans need our help. We’re a small charity making a global difference with 80% of donations going directly toward the protection and preservation of orangutans in Borneo. As a registered charity in the United Kingdom, the Appeal is dedicated to the rehabilitation and conservation of orangutans and their rainforest habitat. To fulfill this mission the Appeal identifies specific areas of need, which it can adopt as projects. Each project is funded and carried out by an Appeal team. The charity demonstrates its commitment to the local economy by purchasing goods, services and labour locally wherever possible..

The Appeal has funded a vast number of projects including:

- Research project ‘Post - Release Orangutan Monitoring’ acknowledged by the Prince’s Rainforests Project for its contribution to conservation: It aims to provide a sustainable future for the endangered orangutan species. (http://www.princesrainforestsproject.org/rainforest-nations/asia-oceania/case-study/project-example-orangutan)

- Veterinary care sponsorship of the resident vet and veterinary nurse; medical and pharmaceutical supplies

- Building new Intensive Care Unit where sick orangutans can be given around the clock care and be treated away from the other individuals in the nursery or quarantine

- Nursery and exercise facilities like the large outdoor exercise enclosure, known as the ‘The Jungle Gym’

- Helicopter translocations since the first successful relocation of King Ghaz on the 23rd July 2001 to a remote rainforest reserve, the Appeal has funded the relocation and release of a further 4 orangutans by helicopter

- A new Land Rover 4x4, purchased for Sepilok to enable rescues and releases of orphaned and injured orangutans in the deepest parts of the forest. The Appeal continues to maintain the vehicle

- Public awareness campaigns to free captives forced to perform in shows or take part in ‘boxing matches’ - requiring the production and dissemination of literature globally

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (SORC)
Orangutan Appeal UK is the only charity dedicated to raising money on behalf of the world famous SORC. Established in 1964, Sepilok lies on the edge of 43 sq km of virgin lowland equatorial forest. Here, they take in ex-captive, orphaned and rescued orangutans, where they are taught vital survival skills such as learning how to forage for fruit, climb trees and build nests.

It costs approximately RM7,500 a year to care for just one orangutan at Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre in Borneo who care for more than 50!

At the age of 5-6 years, the orangutans are then released into a protected rainforest reserve. Some easily take to their new surroundings, while others prefer a lifestyle shared between the natural environment, the Wildlife Rangers and the Appeal’s Research Team.

This contact provides a chance to monitor the orangutans in their natural habitat and their ability to adapt, observe their health and reproduction, with a number having successfully gone on to produce off-spring!

Whilst rehabilitation is the primary goal of Sepilok, conservation and public education are also very much at the forefront of their activities.

Alongside Sepilok the Appeal is committed to helping wherever orangutans are in need of rescuing, repatriating and rehabilitating. The work of the charity has covered a broad spectrum of orangutan related issues including the ill treatment and abuse of captive held individuals, funding pioneering surgery, and assisting centres no longer able to meet the welfare needs of the orangutans in their care.

Rockin’ for the Environment presents an important opportunity to promote and increase awareness of the Orangutan Appeal UK and the overall impact of climate change - whilst help raise vital funds.

Thank you.
